Science

In our rapidly evolving world science is a vital part of our curriculum intention. Science stimulates and excites pupils’ curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. It also satisfies their curiosity with knowledge. Because science links direct practical experience with ideas, it can engage learners at many levels. Scientific method is about developing and evaluating explanations through experimental evidence and modelling. Pupils learn to question and discuss science-based issues that may affect their own lives, the direction of society and the future of the world.

As a school, we have been supported by Phil Watkins a leading science consultant in the North East and are have been awarded the PQSM. Through this support our science lead has ensured that our science curriculum is highly engaging and has excellent outcomes for all pupils. Teachers have received high quality CPD which has transferred into the outstanding teaching and learning of science across the school.

As Science is a core subject, it is taught for a whole afternoon each week in KS1 and KS2.  It is taught in mixed ability groups and lessons include questioning, enquiry, fair tests and investigations. Visits and visitors are planned to enhance the curriculum and develop science capital in school. National science week is celebrated every year and children are given opportunities to experience a wider range of science activities and topics, which go beyond the curriculum.
